In order to improve the future traffic quality for the town of Herzogenburg, the
existing railroad grade crossing in the “Wiener Straße” (L110)
area will be replaced by an underpass. The long daily waiting times at the current
railroad crossing (up to 4 hours a day) and the 7,000 vehicles on peak days necessitate
this measure.
On 2009/03/16 the official start of construction for the “Reconstruction of
Herzogenburg Railroad Station” project commenced. HOCHTIEF Construction Austria
carries out the work by order of ÖBB-Infrastruktur Bau AG as part of a consortium.
The underpass - the centerpiece of the contract section - is realized as a “white
tank” (watertight tank) across a length of approximately 155 m due to the
great groundwater fluctuations and the nearby river Traisen. For this purpose the
relocation of the L 110, Wiener Straße is required. The new L 110, spanning
approximately 500 m in length, is routed in a westward direction and connected to
a municipal road in the direction of the town center. With a roadway width of 7.5
m the new state road meets the present-day traffic standard.
Furthermore, the bid comprises extensive demolition and cutting works, the construction
of all earth structures for the reconstruction of the railroad, execution of soil
replacement and drainage measures, construction of roads, paths, tracks, railroad
bridge and a pedestrian underpass as well as the conducting of the cable runs for
the signal, telecom and energy systems.
The new underpass is to be open to traffic by the end of 2009; the overall completion
of the works is scheduled for June 2010.
