Salzburg Main Station – being the most important traffic junction in the state
of Salzburg – is one of the largest train stations in Austria, with up to
25,000 passengers per day.
The future through station will assume the role of a regional and international
hub and will fully meet the requirements of the new age of rail transport. A high
level of customer comfort, short distances, barrier-free changing of trains, optimal
information for passengers, a central arcade with shops, and a unique architectural
concept that unites listed, historical parts of buildings and a modern railway infrastructure
will give the festival city a distinctive new portal.
In the coming years one of Austria’s most modern train stations will be built
in consultation with the Austrian Federal Office for Monuments, preserving the historical
roof structure that covers the present middle platform. The existing passenger tunnels
will be replaced by a wide passageway, which will connect the two city districts
of Schallmoos and Elisabeth-Vorstadt. This will ensure that the platforms can be
reached comfortably. During the construction of the railway track system, the railway
bridges over Plainstraße, Rainerstraße and the Nelböck Viaduct
will also be renovated.
Construction work will be carried out while the railway services are in full operation.
During the various construction phases, a few platforms will be closed off temporarily.
The trains affected by this will pull into alternative platforms. High logistic
demands will also have to be fulfilled, as construction work in the inner-city area
must be carried out under extremely confined space conditions.
For a long time Salzburg Main Station acted as a border station to Germany and was
therefore designed as a combined through station and ‘island’ station.
Up to now Salzburg Main Station was the terminal station for most trains. The new
through station will enable more trains to pass through in future. This expansion
of the railway track infrastructure will improve the West-East connection and integrate
the Salzburg Main Station even more effectively into the trans-European transport
network from Paris and Stuttgart via Vienna to Bratislava (TEN 17).
