For more than a decade a by-pass for Straßwalchen has been an issue. Daily traffic jams and queuing cars  block the town centre and have a huge impact on the quality of life of the residents of Straßwalchen. In spring 2011 the Federal State Government of Salzburg finally put this project out to tender. HOCHTIEF Construction Austria was awarded the contract for the currently largest construction project in the Federal State of Salzburg; on 15 July 2011 the company conducted the ground-breaking ceremony in the presence of representatives of the federal state government.

In August 2011 HOCHTIEF Construction Austria started the construction work, which will last until January 2014.

The scope of the project includes the construction works to build two subsurface routes (267 m and 688 m) with railroad undercrossings of the Westbahn and of the Austrian Federal Railways section from Steindorf to Braunau, as well as all road construction works. The two subsurface routes will be constructed as rectangular, reinforced concrete frame constructions with dual carriageways. The installation of auxiliary bridges is required for the undercrossing of the tracks. In this area the subsurface route will be concreted on the sides in some sections and set below the auxiliary bridges due to space restrictions.

Appropriate provisional construction measures will ensure that the road traffic on the B1 and B147, as well as the road connections in the secondary municipal road network will be maintained during the construction process.

After the by-pass has been completed, a 40% decline in the traffic volume in the town centre of Straßwalchen is to be expected. This equates to a reduction of 11,300 vehicles per day.
